Nadja Verena Marcin | Zero Gravity

"Zero Gravity" is a video-performance that imaginatively combines art and science. Floating weightless in a plane over Florida, Marcin revisits Friedrich Nietzsche’s ‚Die Frohliche Wissenschaft‘, going beyond the assertion that „God is dead” to explore the deep emotional quality of the text: "What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward in any direction? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing?“ The emotionality and gravity of the text finds expression. Simultaneously, Marcin is hindered through the physical release of endorphins, which she sees as a metaphor for the omnipresent triumph of ‘The Society of the Spectacle’ (1967, Debord). Commissioned by WARP- Contemporary Art Platform at Coup de Ville and co-sponsored by Aurora Aerospace.

German-born artist Nadja Verena Marcin,  lives and works in Nordrhine-Westphalia, Germany and New York, USA. She graduated from the Visual Art Department of New Genre, School of the Arts at Columbia University, New York in 2010, after obtaining a Diploma of Fine Arts from the Department of New Media at Academy of Fine Arts Münster. In her performance-based work Marcin examines the constructed persona, looking at the way the artist is an implicit figure. By creating a “theater of cinema” that the audience can be immersed in, Marcin brings awareness through a hyperbolic interpretation of relatable scenarios, enacts symbolic actions, catalyzing the visibility of hidden codes. Her work appropriates familiar imagery and mirrors the ambiguities of human behavior and psychological mechanism.

In addition, Marcin has lectured at the MFA program in Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice, at CUNY- City College of New York; the MFA program for Performance and Interactive Media Arts, Brooklyn College, New York; and is currently an adjunct faculty member at P.I. Arts Center, New York for Video and New Media. Marcin is also the Founder and Creative Director of Kunstraum LLC, an interdisciplinary team of curators, artists and architects that seeks to promote local and international emerging art and outstanding art concepts.

The work was presented in the Transmission Video Art Exhibition, that took place in Athens at BIOS Cultural Center and the Bagkeion in the context of the Athens Biennale AB5to6 "Omonoia".
