Erasmia Tsipra developed and presented "Bordercrossing Flesh" in the context of ACTS OF ENGAGEMENT, a ten-day collaborative working cycle for art in the public sphere, organized by C.A.S.A. in the context of the Athens Biennale AB5to6. Through the program artists and researchers from Greece and abroad explore in a ten-day workshop the role of art outside conventional art spaces and how audiences and residents can be involved into action while re-examining the function of the urban public space of Omonoia square, in the center of the city of Athens.
Erasmia Tsipra approaches her public performance work with a sense of urgency and directness. She considers working in the public sphere important due to the opportunities it offers for art to be exposed to a broader public, beyond the "closed" environments of the museum / gallery, as well as the multiplicity of interactions that the work sets up within an outdoor public setting. Tsipra approaches the public space as a space of "polyphony", as a site (citee) that is a natural-unnatural stage for expression, a canvas in which the artist is positioned and positions.
For Tsipra, public art makes apparent a new openness of the public towards appreciating artistic interventions to the everyday, while, on the other hand, the tendency of artists to develop new methods of awakening of social consciences and of observing a social reality, lead towards more direct ways of working, and a new sensitivity towards engaging with the public.
In this durational public performance the artist, wearing a burka, is located on the center of Omonoia Square. Next to her is a microphone, that records sounds, voices, soundscapes generated from passers-by. Exposed parts begin to show, initially fingers, then an arm, then a leg. On the exposed parts a line is drawn, that for the artist symbolizes the routes from east to west, towards the here-and-now, towards Omonoia Square. At the end of the performance the body resembles a world map, divided by multiple "paths".
