The House of Women: For Empowerment and Emancipation

Informational address by Shayan Ahmad, from The House of Women: For Empowerment and Emancipation, at the Performative Fest of the Commons on Avdi Square.

The Performative Fest of the Commons took place as an intervention on the public installation for Documenta 14 - Sanka Ivecovic's Monument to Revolution, a work that "reimagines Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Monument to Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht".

The House of Women: For Empowerment and Emancipation, is a self-organised Feminist advocacy group, that operates horizontally, through assemblies, without hierarchies, and the involvement of NGO's and political parties. Inspired by antisexist and antirasist prinicples, they fight for the eradication of gender violence, homophobia / transphobia, with a focus on supporting female refugees that are victims of sexual and other abuses. The group performs regular visits the to police-run refugee detention centers in Athens, so as to provide psychological, legal and practical support to the inmates. Outside the detention centers, the group organises educational programs and fundraising events, that provide a platform for women refugees and former inmates to speak publicly about their experiences, and to spread information about the often inhuman conditions of detention and human rights violations that take place there.

During the fest on Avdi Square, the advocacy group The House of Women: For Empowerment and Emancipation distribute information, raise awareness, and sell hancrafted items, collecting donations for the purchase of first-aid goods for the support of the women refugee inmates held at Petrou Ralli Foreign National Detention Center. Public address by Shayan Ahmad.
