March 23 – March 6, 2015

Group exhibition at BETON7

Organised and curated by C.A.S.A.

For BAD PAINTING group exhibition, our curators James Simbouras and Lykourgos Porfyris select work representing a wide range of approaches and influences, setting up a surprising dialogue  between three contemporary painters.

Underlying the exhibited works are the undercurrents of the harsh realities concerning to the new generation of Greek painters, the use of the painting surface as a platform and a metaphorical screen for the projection of what is undeniably at once social, interpersonal and dramatic. Uncompromising and direct, the  works maintain strong references to urban culture and the experiences of the everyday.

The artists of BAD PAINTING also share a functional, informed approach in relation to historic painting traditions and exhibit a fluency in selectively appropriating and re-examining the conventions of the medium.

The title of the exhibition BAD PAINTING serves to underline the "outlier" status of contemporary painting, as the exhibition attempts to reinvigorate a critical discourse around the painting medium. At a time where a new generation of painters is developing within a climate of isolation from the commercial world and from critical discourse, the exhibition focuses on three painters from Athens, proving that painting remains a vitally responsive and evolving medium through which artists insist in being reactionary, unconventional, engaging, and to make strong commentary, as the "bad boy" of the art mediums, that often goes unheard but refuses to stay silent.
